The workshop, conducted by Florida Sea Grant, is designed specifically for local government attorneys and planners, but local government administrators and staff responsible for infrastructure will also benefit from learning about legal issues and liabilities that they may not yet be fully considering. CLE credits for attorneys and CM credits for certified planners are pending.
The workshop will begin with an overview of climate change law generally and then focus in on a key impact for Florida: sea-level rise. Topics to be covered include:
- The potential role of notice or disclosure to coastal property purchasers
- Rolling easements and possible implementation
- Impacts of The Bert Harris Act on adaptation options for local governments, including potential defenses for local governments
- Information on state-level planning initiatives, including a pilot project on Adaptation Action Areas
- Possible liability of local governments for flooding or infrastructure problems related to sea-level rise or other coastal hazards.
